Diploma Courses

What is a diploma?

In New Zealand, a diploma course gives you a qualification slightly below that of a bachelor’s degree. It’s usually taught through tertiary education and includes work placement or a traineeship in order to give you a qualification that will be genuinely useful in the workplace. Further study options exist in the form of an advanced diploma, postgraduate diploma, master’s degree or bachelor degree.

You can complete a Diploma course in several specialisations, including:

  • Human Resources
  • Hospitality and Hospitality Management
  • Information Technology and Information Systems
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Business Administration
  • Project Management
  • Languages, including Maori and English

How to study a diploma course:

You can complete a diploma course in a variety of ways at a variety of education providers. Most schools offer Diploma courses, with a number of universities, including the University of Auckland, Massey University and the Auckland University of Technology.

A New Zealand Diploma may be able to be completed after a short course such as a Certificate III or Certificate IV, provided students met other requirements such as English Language skills. There are several full-time and part-time study options for students who have other commitments.

If you’ve already completed study, then you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning, just as when you’ve completed your diploma you may be able to complete an undergraduate degree, postgraduate study or a postgraduate certificate depending on your completed diploma.
