The beauty industry is traditionally female-focused, however, in recent years many men have begun both working in the industry and receiving beauty treatments specifically tailored to them.

Working in the beauty industry, you will be dealing with all sorts of customers. If you’ve had prior experience in customer service or retail or done volunteer/paid work in a hair or beauty salon, you have an advantage.
Some of the soft skills a beauty therapist should have include:
- Friendly and personable
- Organised
- Time management
Beauty therapists also need to be knowledgeable about the human body and different factors that can affect hair, skin and nails, as well as understand how the beauty treatments they are executing impact their client’s bodies.
If they specialise in an area, such as manicures, they must be knowledgeable and possess the required skills. Furthermore, beauty therapists often sell products to their clients to use at home, so they need to have good customer service and sales skills.
